Few young designers have examined luxury sportswear for men as successfully as Astrid Andersen. The Copenhagen-based RCA graduate reinterprets classic tropes of masculine streetwear in bright colours and feminine fabrics, leading to a fresh mix of strength and new sensitivity.
June 12th sees the launch of 17-piece Astrid Andersen for Topman collaboration – and fans of the Danish designer will not be disappointed. The collection features Andersen’s signature oversized silhouettes in a striking palette of black, white and carnation pink, highlighted with with copper foils and chunky metalwork. A logo ‘A’ continues Andersen’s investigation of the themes of belonging.
‘The inspiration was a website I found on Punjab basketball teams from India,’ she says. ‘There were images from the early fifties right up to today. The colour code and metal reflect the traditional Indian use of colours but in a tight palette.’
The stand-out piece in the collection is the pink crushed velvet oversized tracksuit but boys who like to play it safe(r) can enjoy neoprene bombers, closed mesh oversized tees and shorts and funnel neck sweat shirts. ‘I wanted the collection to be very clean and sleek but at the same time push some materials and techniques that will be unconventional for Topman to use,’ says Andersen.
The collection was shot on rapper A$AP Ferg; the two are mutual fans. ‘On set, he was amazing, totally turning the heat up on this project,’ says Andersen. ‘He helped created an end result that I’m very proud of and I value that beyond words.’
Prices start from £45. The collection will be on sale in Topman Oxford Circus an online at topman.com
