It’s quite a year for the ever-pioneering Selfridges. Recently named the world’s best department store for a historic third time running, the retailer is set to launch its most ambitious project yet: making its London headquarters the world’s largest, most comprehensive destination for accessories.

The £300m investment is the biggest ever for a single project by a department store anywhere in the world. At its core is a new luxury handbag department, double the size of the existing space to cover over 50,000sqft of the ground floor. Luxury accessories such as sunglasses and small leather goods will be integrated into the new area.

The store continues its commitment to a democratic, dynamic product range. From high street and contemporary to luxury, from the iconic to the previously undiscovered, the new space will include the loveliest things from some of the most desirable collections in the world. The new handbag space will showcase coveted contemporary brands, from Charlotte Olympia and Sophie Hulme to 3.1 Phillip Lim, through to luxury powerhouses including Hermès, Chanel and Céline.

Together with The Wonder Room, which houses the store’s fine jewellery and watches, and both The Shoe Galleries and Men’s Shoes (respectively the largest shoe departments in the world), Selfridges London will become the world’s largest, most comprehensive destination for accessories for men and women across well over 100,000sqft.

Work start in June 2014 and will be completed within five years.
