You’ve won’t have heard of Sophy Robson unless you’re into nails but if you are, then Sophy is GOD. Her ability to innovate and experiment, whether with a shape or a technique, has had Kanye West, Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs as well as the Olympics, for which she created flag nail designs, clamouring to work with her. Her designs have tipped the fingers of Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne. She is also personal nail artist to Rita Ora, a girl who never knowingly stints on glamour.
In contrast, I’m someone who rarely files, let alone paints their nails. Yet even I’m happy when beautymart.com invites me down to Harvey Nichols to meet Sophy. The woman is nail royalty and she’s bringing out her own range of faux nail designs, Nail-Its, just in time for party season.
Because of Sophy’s experience, Nail-Its are probably the most perfect set of press-ons you’ll lay your hands on (excuse the pun). They’re beautifully shaped, with slightly pointed tips, and shorter for practicality and a more modern look. They feature deep European-scale nail bed and include enough middle range nails so you won’t run out of useful sizes.
And they’re a snap to put on, especially when you have Sophy herself doing them. ‘Though I’ve put these on in the back of a cab,’ she adds, laughing.
Six designs include Animal Print, Red Half Moon, White French Tip, Black French Tip, classic styles updated for the 21st century.
And, while you could say they aren’t as Sophie-tastic as fans are used to (check her Tumblr tumblr and photoblog NailPorn, where you realise that for Sophy, nails are basically canvases for anarchy and play), they’re super-pretty and can be filed, painted over and customised according to taste.
‘They do offer an instant transformation if you haven’t got time to go to the salon,’ points out Sophy. ‘But there’s no reason why you can’t wear them all the time. You can decorate them yourself, you can paint over them. So, even if you need them for only one night, you don’t have to stick to the designs I’ve given you. They’re ideal for fashion shoots.’
For Christmas proper, Sophy is offering two box sets, collabs with make-up brands she’s loved in the past, and which twin one of Sophy’s nail colours with an artfully complementary lip colour. Daniel Sandler has provided a fire engine red lipstick to go with Sophy’s red half moons and Glitter Lips, a sparkly purple to work with Sophy’s black deco ribbon designs. Deck the halls, indeed.
And me? Well, after decades of shorn nails, it took me half a day to work out how to tap a message on the mobile with my new Nail-Its but, trust me, the girls are going to love these.
Nail-Its are available now at Thisisbeautymart, priced at £9.95 each. www.thisisbeautymart.com
